Nothing overly interesting has happened in our house this week. It was pretty much business as usual. Dave travelled briefly to Virginia and Nicholas did not go to sleep before 11:30 either night. Wednesday night he then woke me up at 1:30, Megan woke me up at 3:30, our contractor neighbor (who never wakes me up when he and his crew leave at 5:00) woke me up at 5:00 and Cammy was crying to be let out and fed at 6:45. WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I felt like I had a newborn again! Let me tell you, this made for a very grumpy Thursday for EVERYONE!Megan brought home her very first actual work from school. This was no silly apple-print project or anything....it was her "letter a" packet! She was SOOOOO proud! She's feeling very scholarly.Speaking of scholarly, Nicholas has gotten 100% on his first two spelling tests of the year. This is huge because while math and reading come very easily to him, he has had to work VERY hard to tackle spelling. Each Friday morning we have nervously sent him off saying, "Well....relax and do your best," and each Friday afternoon he has come home beaming and announcing, "I aced it!" His words have included write, grade, clean, computer, phone, ready, wobbly, pretzels and nowhere...15 last week and 18 this week. The picture of the week is of my mailbox.
Can you see it through the jungle? Ugh! I think the whole neighborhood is laughing at me, "Look at that poor girl trying to garden!" When we bought the house two years ago there were these really tall lily-type things around the mailbox. I hated them because the were so huge and ate up the mailbox. That fall I cut them back, dug them up and planted them somewhere else. The next spring I planted impatiens, hoping they would bush up and look like the beautiful gardens I saw all over town. Nope. Too much sun and not enough water killed them and I had an ugly mailbox all last summer. This year I bought a box of "Garden Mix for Sun" seed sprinkles at WalMart for $1. Megan and I sowed them in early May, thinking that if they didn't work out by June we could go buy flowers. It was nuts. I couldn't tell what were weeds and what were flowers. I just let everything grow for a month and waited to see what bloomed. I watered and fertilized.....and went to Home Depot by early June and bought some marigolds and purple things. Well, lo and behold, by July and August, what I suspected could be weeds but didn't want to pull, shot up to 4 - 6 FEET tall, drowning out the bought flowers! In late August they started blooming. Dave has tried to stay silent, but a few pointed comments have slipped out. My feelings aren't hurt...I agree that they're out of control and pretty funny! Oh well....there's always next year!PS: Here's a gratuitous picture of Zoey. The boys may have rescued her, but she's a Mama's girl. This is her little bed right next to my pillow.

Way to go Nick and Megan on their spelling and letters! :) And...way to go Heather on your very big flowers. I like them. They're cheerful, right? Big, colorful, sunny-cheerful (...and...okay...a little tiny bit funny-cheerful too). Anyway, I like 'em. :)
Just to let you know, Auntie Patti(who has,as far as I'm concerned, has a Better Homes and garden yard) has the exact same flowers in her flower garden. So be proud!!!!!!!!
