Sorry for the Braveheart reference. Fast forward a few hundred years to not Scottish, but American independence. (Sorry, British relatives.) Nick is absolutely obsessed with both National Treasure movies and all things historical. He checks books out of the library about presidents and Ben Franklin. He has begged us for months to take him to Washington, DC. Sorry pal, DC wasn't in the cards this summer, but BOSTON is right on our doorstep! Today we took him on a special afternoon with just Mom & Dad to do the full-on Freedom Trail guided tour. It only included the first mile of the Trail, but he's seven...he probably wouldn't have made it all the way to Charlestown!
Captain Hawkins was our guide. We started on Boston Common, walked past Park Street Church to the Granary Cemetery, walked through a few streets and alleys to see mentioned sights from some of the stories told at those locations, risked our lives to stand at the sight of the Boston
Massacre (now the middle of a very busy intersection) and ended at Faneuil Hall. That's where Captain Hawkins left us, but we continued on in search of food. We walked over to the North End for pizza and cannoli, then took the T back to The Common to get our car. Nick got to be the visual aid for every story. He was the only kid in the group. Well, there were a few public on-lookers, but Captain Hawkins was sure to service his PAYING customers! It was a great day and we all learned a few things...even this self-proclaimed social studies
