Gluttony

Gluttony is bad. That's a well documented fact. It is, however fun. Let's call how we ate on vacation a "culinary adventure" rather than gluttony. That sounds better. I think if you rename a vice it no longer counts. Vacations also do not count. One's cholesterol, blood pressure and health in general have the other 51 weeks of the year to recover. Well...I guess then you have to ignore all major holidays and the entire end of December as well. There you go, I declare that gluttony is permissible on vacations, all major holidays and the last two weeks of December.

On the way to the lake on Saturday we were cell phoning my parents about plans for dinner. They would probably arrive half an hour to an hour after us. We said we'd take care of picking up dinner on the way. Pick it up we did! Dave suggested a big family treat to kick off vacation. We stopped at a seafood place and picked up live lobsters and steamers. We were going to stop at the next farm stand for local corn (there, that's healthy!), but they had closed up for the evening. Another cell phone call gave my folks the corn assignment, but we kept the main course a secret. We all had fun cooking and eating big, fancy meal. The kids had a great time! They enjoyed the steamers more than the lobster.
Sunday night, after the extended family headed home we went out for pizza. It was wonderful! Greasy and salty and extra cheesy just like I love it! The kids got Doritos/Cheetos and soda as well. Mmmmm!

Monday we let our systems rest.

Tuesday night we made our pilgrimage to the "Pig Pit". It's actually called the "Yankee Smokehouse," but there's a big pig on the sign and we affectionately call it the Pig Pit. Oh, Mama! This was a treat for all the senses! Who cares if it's raining when you're eating BBQ!
Wednesday we had lunch in Conway, NH at the Upcountry Tavern. They had yummy sandwiches and even yummier desserts! Any time I'm eating cannoli I'm happy. We thought it was cool that they not only provided kids with coloring supplies, but games like Connect Four. Sweet!Thursday, after the farm and mini-golf/go-carts we went to another pizza/subs place. Megan had won a free ice cream to the place for getting a hole-in-one. It being pretty late, we decided to eat some actual food there as well. The stuff all tasted good, no complaints....until....98% of the way through my spinach and cheese calzone, I found a bit of "cheese" that was not really cheese at all! It was a bit of a latex glove! Aaaaak! I politely told the kid at the counter and next thing I knew the guy that runs the place was at my table. He was all, "We don't even use that type of glove here...must have come in in the cheese...I've already called my supplier...." Ehh...he gave us our money back and I didn't get sick...no harm done.

Friday was the day Dave came up with the grand plan to eat "supper" at the make-your-own sundae place. I wish I had my camera with me to not only capture the "supper", but also the kids' gleeful faces! You'll have to just picture it in your mind. Sorry.

I think we survived Saturday and Sunday without much junk. Well, we had MacDonalds on our way home. I did have lots of fruit around for snacks. On the other hand, Nick had bacon every single morning and I think Dave and Megan had ice cream sandwiches for breakfast once. There was and abundance of soda. I hope neither our pediatrician nor our dentist are reading this! I'm not a health food nut or anything, but I know gluttony when I see it! So far the junk food detox has gone well today! There was even a home-grown zucchini involved in dinner!

Pancakes and bacon!
