First day of Second Grade

Nick struggles with change. Honestly, who doesn't....but Nick REALLY struggles with it. For the last week or so he's been getting tense about school starting. Yesterday he stated that he wasn't going. We had the normal conversation (at least I hope it's normal) that it's the law and Mommy would get arrested if he didn't go....he couldn't really be a scientist/inventor with a 1st grade education...etc. His answer was that he'd go to Canada. Dodging 2nd grade like dodging the draft? I didn't get it, but I'm pretty sure it's also the law for 7-year-olds to go to school in Canada. He suggested the North Pole. I suppose that would answer both my arguments: no required school and a noble occupation as an elf!
Well, off he went on the bus this morning. A few knots in his stomach, but no tears this year. When he got back off the bus this afternoon he had a smile on his face and throughout the evening he filled us in on lots of cool things that happened today. We're all exhausted from the stress and I think we'll all sleep well tonight!!
