On being mothered well

I have to say that of all the blessings in my life, one of the ones that fills my heart the most is just how well I have been mothered in my life. First, of course, by my Mom, but also by my great-grandmothers, my grandmothers and my aunts as well as many teachers and mentors throughout life. I now also have a host of fabulous women in my in-law family. One does not have to bear someone from their womb to mother them. This I know to be true. This is something that I am very pleased my children are also experiencing.

Megan and I had a discussion about this as we were running errands the other morning. We were picking up little trinkets and remembrances for all the mothers we would be celebrating this weekend. We were having a lot of fun doing it. Somehow we ended up talking about what it meant to be a mother to someone else. I told her that a mother loves her children, takes care of them and prays for them. We decided together that ALL the Grandmas, Nanas, Grammies, Ymas, and Aunties certainly fit that bill in our lives.

As for the actual celebrations, we had BBQ at Nana & Papa's house Saturday complete with 2 great-grandmas, a Nana, an Aunt Ellie and a Mommy (me). Ribs, corn on the cob, too many salads and baseball in the backyard....perfect. Sunday we went to Yma & Gugs' for steak, fruit, desserts, baseball, desserts, fiercely competitive croquet, desserts...did I mention desserts? It was a super-fun day to honor a Yma (great-grandmother), a Grammy, 2 Aunties and even a few cousins! Megan ended up with 2 rough head bumps (note the pic with Grammy and the ice pack) within 15 minutes, but she bounced back quickly and ended the day well. Bonus picture: She is already catching on to the whole mothering idea with her cousin Joey!

One funny story: Nicholas insisted on getting me a gift "as seen on tv". Is there any other type of gift in Nick's eyes? Anyway, he suggested it over a month ago and has kept after Dave about it. Therefore, one day very soon a set of 4 aqua-globes will be arriving at my house. Nick informed me that they come in blue, green, red and multi. I'll keep everyone informed as to how well they work. Note to self: limit Nick's tv time!
